Fish and Game Commissioner Charles E. Oak, made a trip through northern Somerset lately, arriving in Augusta on Monday. He went to Bingham on business and from there took a team across country to Jackman, about 55 miles. This was above The Forks of the Kennebec and he was surprised to find a good road through from Bingham the entire distance, it being the longest distance that is kept in condition. He found everywhere that deer were plenty, and had two chances to [shoot], though he took no [advantage of them], even though he had a [ticket] to do so in case he [wished]. — Kennebec Journal.

(The item is itself a reprint "from the Kennebec Journal," as the closing attribution shows — a common practice for small Maine papers of this era, republishing a paragraph from a larger regional paper.)
