Keep in mind: Copyist's abstract of a Vermont roll (heading: Gen. Fletcher's orders of 10 Sept 1782; Athens militia marched toward Guilford to assist the Sheriff; 2 days, 13 miles). The roll concerns September 1782; 18 Jan 1783 is the roll date. Compiled service card (copy of a roll) for a Nathaniel Oak in Capt. Chaffe's Vermont company; the roll covers September 1782 service at Athens, and the same company shows Seth Oak and Nathaniel Oak on the Chaffee pay roll. Identification with Nathaniel Oak born 1762 is Likely; identity with other Nathaniel Oak service groups is not assumed.
