Sir:
I have to advise you that from the papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim W. 25398 it appears that Nathaniel Oak (or Oakes or Oaks) while a resident of Winchendon, Massachusetts enlisted and served three or four months in Captain Ephraim Houghton's Company, Colonel Denny's Regiment which marched to Fort Stanwix, New York, and also served six months in Colonel Thomas Nixon's 6th Massachusetts Regiment and was discharged therefrom December 16, 1780.
Soldier married December 3, 1787 in Athens, Windham County, Vermont, Susan Evans. He died March 25, 1830 in said Athens and she was allowed pension on her application executed September 26, 1838 while a resident of said Athens aged sixty-nine years.
Their first and second children (names not stated) died when small and Willard the third child was aged forty-seven or forty-eight years in 1838.
Respectfully,
Commissioner.

Keep in mind: Part of pension file W.25398 (Nathaniel Oak of Athens, Vt., died 25 March 1830, married Susan Evans 1787; widow Susan Oaks). The file itself is a Confirmed record of that man. That he is the Nathaniel Oak born 1762, son of Seth Oak of Winchendon and Athens, is Likely: an inquirer's 1923 letter (scan 00116) says so and the Pension Office reply fits his 1780 service; the file never names his parents. Keep this file separate from the Chelsea pensioner's S.18534. A later official summary, not independent testimony. It names Capt. Ephraim Houghton where a compiled card (not registered here) names Jotham Houghton; the discrepancy is kept.
