Nathaniel, Jr. was one of 9 children born to Nathaniel Oak, Sr. and his 1st wife, Susanna (Hastings).

"Nathaniel left Chelsea, Vermont, at age 18, with all his possessions hanging from a stick over his shoulder. He worked on bridges and other structures in Portsmouth and Bangor, Maine. At last he visited his sister, Abigail, in Exeter, ME, where he bought a farm in the wilderness, cleared the land and made it his home for life. He stood six feet tall in his stocking feet and was a model of athletic manhood; his character was equal to his physique. From the beginning he was a model citizen."

He married Abigail (Cartland) on November 31, 1811, in Lee, New Hampshire.

Their 8 children:

1) Eliza, b. 1812

2) Samuel, b. 1814

3) Abigail, b. 1816

4) Harriet, b. 1817

5) Nathaniel, b. 1819; supposedly lived to 106 years of age; in 1906 still living on farm in Exeter, ME

6) George, b. 1821

7) Joseph, b. 1823

8) Mary, b. 1825
