SENSATIONAL SUIT.
Local Firm Being Sued for Violating Federal Laws.
J. L. Slayden, W. B. Clarkson and W. C. Robards are being sued by the United States of America in the United States Circuit Court for $1,000, charging them with violating an act of Congress approved February 26, 1895, entitled "an act to prohibit the importation and immigration of foreigners or aliens under contract or agreement to perform labor in the United States, its Territories, and the District of Columbia." The petition cites that on July 15, 1895, the defendants, as a partnership, acting through W. B. Clarkson, entered into an express parol contract in the kingdom of Great Britain with one Charles Bryner Schrieber, then a resident citizen in the Kingdom of Great Britain, whereby the said Schreiber was to emigrate into this country for the purpose of performing labor and service for the defendants in the capacity of a cotton buyer, and that Schreiber entered the United States and complied with the terms of the contract last August 1.
