Biography

Mary Catherine Young, also recorded as Katherine Dixon, lived in Amory, Mississippi, with her husband William, a railroad worker, and their children.

Marriage and family

Mary was born in Mississippi around 1869 or 1870. A marriage index quoted on her memorial records her marriage to W. L. Dixon in Monroe County on December 27, 1892.

Likely About this evidence

The original marriage record is not cited. Her name varies across records: Mary, Mary Cathleen and Katherine. The tree names her parents as Jasper Newton Young and Mary M. Westbrook; her funeral report instead calls them the late Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Young. Her parents' identities remain unresolved.

A railroad household

In 1910, Mary and William owned a home in Amory and had three children at home: Ella, Gordon and Gerald. William worked as a steam-railroad laborer. Ten years later he worked at the Frisco shops; the household included Louis Gordon, Gerald and Edith (1920 census).

Confirmed About this evidence

The 1910 census records three children born and living, conflicting with the tree's 1909 birth for Edith.

By 1930, Mary and William lived on Front Street, where he repaired railroad cars. A married daughter listed as Westbrook and a young grandson lived with them. The census valued their house at $350. None of these censuses recorded an occupation for Mary (1930 census).

Confirmed About this evidence

The married daughter in 1930 fits Edith by age but is not securely identified from that entry alone.

Her death in 1937

The Clarion-Ledger's October 1937 funeral report described Katherine Dixon, 68, as an Amory church and club leader. Her pastor, the Rev. J. A. George of First Methodist Church, conducted the service at the Dixon home, assisted by the Rev. J. F. Measells of First Baptist Church. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery.

Likely About this evidence

The report's October 11 dateline says the funeral was the previous day, suggesting October 10; an index instead gives October 11 for burial. It supplies no explicit death date or cause.

The notice named her husband, two sons, two married daughters, her brother John Henry Young and her sister Mrs. Lee Westbrook as survivors. A shared gravestone gives Katherine's years as 1869–1937 and William's as 1869–1939 (memorial; his memorial).

Likely About this evidence

The original report identifies Lee Westbrook as a sister's married name, correcting the index-based description of two brothers. William's 1939 gravestone date conflicts with 1937 in the tree.
