How to read this page

Sex is as recorded in the family tree. Age at death is worked out from the dates shown and may be a range or an approximation. It is left out when a date is missing or is only a “before”, “after” or “between” date, when the research has found a date Unconfirmed, when the two dates conflict, or when they would mean an age over 110.

Husband: Nathaniel Oak 1751-1840
Likely evidence: show why

Why: The Bolton vital records list the marriage of 'Nathaniel Jr.' and Susanna Hastings on 2 June 1773, without residence or parentage for the groom, so 'Jr.' fits the Nathaniel born in 1742 as well. Three further records point to the 1751 man as that groom: the Chelsea death card for 'Susannah Oak', aged 52, who died 7 September 1801, gives her husband as Nathaniel Oak; the Winslow Memorial (1877) calls their daughter Nancy 'dau. of Captain Nathaniel and (Hastings) of C.' (Chelsea); and a granddaughter born at Chelsea in 1808 was named Susannah Hastings Oak. None of them names the groom of 1773 directly, and the pension file names no wife, so the link is likely, not confirmed.

Earlier: Confirmed (09-24-2026, research): The printed Bolton vital records list the marriage of Susanna Hastings and Nathaniel Oak Jr., June 2, 1773. · Unconfirmed (10-03-2026, research): The printed Bolton vital records list the marriage of 'Nathaniel Jr. and Susanna Hastings', 2 June 1773 (page 157, viewed). The entry gives no residence or parentage for the groom, and 'Jr.' fits Nathaniel born 1742 as well as Nathaniel born 1751. Only the 1906 register says the groom was the 1751 man; nothing independent confirms it, and his pension declaration (S.18534, as transcribed) mentions no wife or marriage.

Confirmed evidence: show why
(the family tree records 11 FEB 1748/49, Bolton, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA)
DiedSep 1801 (day 7 per the index; the digit on the card is ambiguous), Chelsea, Vermont
Likely evidence: show why

Why: A death card for 'Susannah Oak', aged 52 years 6 months 14 days, husband 'Nathianiel Oak', died in Sept 1801, from the Chelsea town records (a town-clerk copy certified 1 October 1919, read on the image by two readers, who agree on every word except the day). The day is 7 in FamilySearch's index and in a Find a Grave index entry; on the card the digit could be read as 7 or 2. The card gives no maiden name or parents; the identification with Susanna Hastings rests on her husband's name, on the age (a birth in about February 1749, near the Bolton entry of 11 February 1748/49) and on the Winslow Memorial's 'Captain Nathaniel and (Hastings)', so it stays likely. The 1906 register gives about 1803.
