How to read this page
- Photos and clippings count items you can view here.
- Cited or transcribed records are counted separately.
- Story links lead to accounts about the person; “Mentioned in another story” marks a passing reference.
- Memorial links open Find a Grave.
- A “family recollection” label marks something a relative remembered, not a written record.
- A military-service label rates the record of that service, not the whole life.
Sex is as recorded in the family tree. Age at death is worked out from the dates shown and may be a range or an approximation. It is left out when a date is missing or is only a “before”, “after” or “between” date, when the research has found a date Unconfirmed, when the two dates conflict, or when they would mean an age over 110.
Overview
Family
Parents
- Father: Blackman Ligon 1797–1865
Unconfirmed evidence: show why
Why: This is the family tree's claim. The better-supported research alternative, shown beside it, is that Robert's father was William Blackman Ligon, Colonel Blackman's brother: the 1818 Louisiana marriage record gives the husband of Eliza Lawn (the tree's mother for Robert) as William B. Ligon, and the 1947 Ligon genealogy makes the Colonel William's brother. Both books are compilations, so the alternative is Likely, not Confirmed.
Records:
- William D. Ligon Jr., The Ligon Family and Connections, vol. 1 (1947), nos. 165, 171, 173, 174 and 177: William Blackman Ligon, a son of Blackman and Elizabeth (Townes) Ligon, who married Eliza Lawn; Colonel Blackman Ligon, another son; Robert B. Ligon, a son of William Blackman and Eliza (Lawn) Ligon, who published the Southron at Magnolia; William Orlando Ligon, a son of Robert B. (a compilation citing the 1939 Proceedings of the Ligon Family and Kinsmen Association and Conerly) (view at Internet Archive) (conflicts with this conclusion)
- Louisiana parish marriage index: William B. Ligon and Eliza Lawn, 9 June 1818, St. Tammany Parish (record page · view at FamilySearch) (conflicts with this conclusion)

- Mother: Elizabeth Ann Lawn 1803–1856
Likely evidence: show why
Why: The 1947 genealogy and Conerly name Eliza (Lawn) Ligon as Robert's mother; she is the wife in William B. Ligon's 1850 household (Eliza, 46, born England). The tree's pairing of her with Colonel Blackman is the part in doubt.

- Father: William Blackman Ligon
Unconfirmed evidence: show why
- Father: William Blackman Ligon born c. 1788
Likely evidence: show why
Why: The 1947 Ligon genealogy (no. 174) and Conerly's History of Pike County name Robert as a son of William Blackman and Eliza (Lawn) Ligon; the 1818 Louisiana marriage fits Robert's birth in Louisiana about 1820; and the 1850 census puts both men in Pike County, Mississippi, William B.'s household having the children's first names the books give. Both books are compilations: an original naming father and son (William B.'s probate or will, d. about 1850) would make it Confirmed.
