About Lucia

Biography

Lucia Mancini came from Pescolanciano to join her husband in Newark in 1921, was widowed less than three years later with three children, and remarried in 1930.

Pescolanciano to Newark

Lucia was born at a quarter past nine in the evening on April 22, 1894, in the family's house at 63 Via Garibaldi, Pescolanciano, then in the province of Campobasso. Two days later her father, Onofrio Mancini, a farm laborer of forty, went to the town hall to register her as Maria Lucia, the daughter of his wife, Addolorata Pellegrino, and signed the act himself (birth record). She married Domenico DiSanto of the same village, and their son Livio (Leo) was born in Italy on December 31, 1911. Domenico had gone ahead to America; Lucia, with Leo, followed from Naples and landed at New York on March 12, 1921, on the steamship Duca degli Abruzzi, under her maiden name, bound for Domenico's address at 33 Prospect Street in Newark; in Pescolanciano she left her mother, Addolorata (naturalization petition).

Confirmed About this evidence

Her birth record is in the Pescolanciano civil register, now at the State Archive in Isernia. Her own naturalization petition gives her eldest son's birth and her arrival. Domenico's 1917 draft card already says he supported a wife and child.

Her parents were probably the couple married at the Pescolanciano town hall on September 16, 1875: Onofrio Antonio Stefano Mancini, a farm laborer, son of the late Pasquale Mancini and a Sacco whose first name is hard to read, and Dolorosa Pellegrino, nineteen, daughter of Antonio Pellegrino and Carmina(?) Del Ciello (marriage record). The names fit, but the groom's age of thirty does not agree with the forty her father gave in 1894, and the bride's mother's first name is an uncertain reading. The groom's mother was probably the Rosa Sacco, widow of Pasquale Mancini, who died at Pescolanciano on November 25, 1871, aged seventy-two, the daughter of Pasquale Sacco and Giuseppa Donatucci (death record); that record does not name Onofrio, and she would have been about forty-five if he was born in 1844-45 but about fifty-four if he was born in 1853-54.

Likely About this evidence

Likely, not Confirmed: identified by the names (Dolorosa taken as a form of Addolorata) and by the absence of any other Onofrio Mancini marriage in the Pescolanciano registers searched for 1875-1893; the ages conflict. Rosa Sacco's death record is matched to the groom's mother provisionally (Likely) by surname, husband's name and town; the 1875 first name is unclear, possibly Rosa, and is not counted as separate support.

Lucia was probably not her parents' first child. Twins, a boy named Pasquale Antonio and a girl named Concetta, were born to Onofrio and Addolorata late on December 8, 1877, while Onofrio was away from the town, so the midwife registered them (birth record); both died on December 11, two days old (death record).

Likely About this evidence

Likely: the records name the parents Onofrio Mancini and Addolorata Pellegrino, as Lucia's birth record does; that the couple is the same is the identification already made for the 1875 marriage.

She probably also had an older sister who lived to adulthood. Maria Giuseppa, a daughter of Onofrio Mancini and Addolorata Pellegrino, was born on January 30, 1879, and her father, giving his age as thirty-three, registered her himself (birth record). At nineteen, on February 12, 1898, she married Luigi Del Ciello, a farm laborer of her own age, and signed the register in her own hand; her mother consented, but her father could not: a sworn declaration made before the magistrate at Carovilli that January stated that he was away and that no news had been heard of him (marriage record; banns).

Likely About this evidence

Likely: both records name the parents Onofrio Mancini and Addolorata Pellegrino, as Lucia's birth record does; that they are the same couple is the inference. Onofrio's age of 33 in 1879 fits his marriage record's 30, not the 40 in Lucia's record.

Another daughter, Maria Domenica, was born in the same house on Via Piazza in the small hours of April 24, 1881, and Onofrio, now giving his age as thirty-six, registered her that morning (birth record). A note later added in the margin records her marriage to Michelarcangelo Testa in May 1902.

Likely About this evidence

Likely: the record names the parents Onofrio Mancini and Addolorata Pellegrino, as Lucia's birth record does; that they are the same couple is the inference. The 1902 marriage is known only from the margin note.

Another probable sister, Lucia Rosa, was born on January 1, 1887, on Via Venti Settembre; her father, recorded as the son of the late Pasquale and aged forty-two, registered her two days later (birth record). That record, a copy made in 1959, calls her mother the daughter of the late Domenico Pellegrino, where the 1875 marriage named Addolorata's father as Antonio, still living; the difference is unexplained. She died aged seven days: on the morning of January 8 Onofrio and Gaetano Maselli, a local landowner, went to the town hall to report that she had died at home at seven o'clock (death record).

Likely About this evidence

Likely: the record names Onofrio Mancini, son of the late Pasquale, and his wife Addolorata Pellegrino; that they are Lucia's parents is the inference. The mother's father is given differently from the 1875 marriage act.

On March 2, 1922, a year after she arrived, Lucia gave birth in Newark to twins, a son and a daughter, Annunziata (Nancy) (birth index). Domenico died in Newark in December 1923. In 1930 Lucia was a widow, the head of her household at 73 Melvern Street, Newark, with Leo, 18, and the twins, 8 (1930 census).

On December 20, 1930, in Newark, Lucia married Giuseppe Antonio (Joseph) DeVito, born at Casalattica, Italy, in 1884, a naturalized citizen since 1926. They made their home at 99 Welland Avenue in Irvington, where the 1940 census lists Joseph, Lucia, his children from an earlier marriage, her twins as his stepchildren and their two young sons (1940 census).

Confirmed About this evidence

The marriage date and her husband's birth are from her naturalization petition. Their sons may be living and are not named.

About 1941, aged 47, she petitioned the federal court at Newark for citizenship. The petition describes her as a housewife, five feet two, with brown eyes, gray hair and a birthmark on her neck. Her younger DiSanto son's World War II draft card gives her as the person who would always know his address.

Likely About this evidence

The petition gives her age as 47, which places it between April 1941 and April 1942; the filing date itself was not checked.

About 1962 Lucia and Joseph moved from Irvington to St. Petersburg, Florida, where they lived at 5442 Sixth Avenue North. She died there on August 28, 1967, at 73. Her funeral notice lists her husband, her son Leo De Santo and three other sons, and her daughter, Mrs. Nancy (Edward) Milewski of Irvington; it names her membership in St. Jude's Women's Guild and the Mater Domini Society, and says her Requiem Mass and burial would be in Newark (St. Petersburg Times, 30 Aug 1967). The Social Security index has a Giuseppe Divito, with Joseph's birth date, dying at St. Petersburg in April 1975.
