How to read this page

Sex is as recorded in the family tree. Age at death is worked out from the dates shown and may be a range or an approximation. It is left out when a date is missing or is only a “before”, “after” or “between” date, when the research has found a date Unconfirmed, when the two dates conflict, or when they would mean an age over 110.

Service

World War II · Navy · 1943 Likely

U.S. Navy, World War II: the Navy's January 1944 report of changes for its radio materiel school at the University of Houston lists "OAK, Allan Eugene," service number 209 16 83, seaman first class, enlisted October 20, 1943, at Portland, Maine (National Archives, Navy muster rolls, Record Group 24). Ancestry's index gives the year as 1942; the roll reads 1943. The roll gives no birth date or family detail, so that this is the family's Allan is likely, not proved.

Likely evidence: show why

Why: His 2012 obituary in the Morning Sentinel says that after graduating from Skowhegan High School in 1943 he entered naval service in World War II, and the Find a Grave memorial that posted it is headed 'US NAVY - WORLD WAR II'. His parents and brothers in the obituary match the tree. No Navy record has been seen, so the level is likely; the obituary's description of his duties is not repeated here.
