This story is about someone or something else, and names John Oak.
Why: The 1899 Lewiston Journal (secondhand) says John Oak of Exeter was a son of Captain Jonathan Oak; Jonathan's will of 1784 names a son John; ages agree; Pamela Lambert called John her brother and appears to be Jonathan's daughter Millie. Against it, the pension file names no parent, Harvard has no matching John, and the Lewiston piece gives Bennington and Quebec service that the file never mentions.

| Born | about 1755 Likely evidence: show whyWhy: From the ages he gave himself: 63 in 1818 and 66 in 1820; the 1899 newspaper says he died at 86 in 1842 (about 1756). No birth record found. Records:

| Died | 25 Jun 1842, Exeter, Penobscot County, Maine Likely evidence: show whyWhy: His widow swore 25 June 1842 at Exeter; the Exeter selectmen certified 'June 1842'; the Pension Office slip reads 25 June 1843 (probably a clerk's slip). The month and year rest on two sources, the day on the widow alone. Records:
