Service

Peacetime service · Militia · about 1810 Confirmed

Estimated: "He commanded the West Company of Infantry for several years" (Butler, A History of Farmington, 1885, p. 565); the history gives no dates for his command, so about 1810 is a guess from his birth in 1780.

Military serviceCommanded the West Company of Infantry (militia) at Farmington, Maine, for several years; his gravestone reads 'Capt. Wm. Russell'
Confirmed evidence: show why

Why: The 1885 Farmington history says 'He commanded the West Company of Infantry for several years'; the stone photograph in the tree reads 'Capt. Wm. Russell, died July 7, 1867, aged 86 yrs 9 mos', which matches his birth. This is peacetime militia command; the years are not stated. A William Russell on a 1814 draft company roll is not attributed to him because the history does not say which William.
