Keep in mind: What the page says: Confirmed from the page image. The Oake entries read: George, s. Mary Rice by 1st husband, ---- Oake, July 7, 1728 (C.R.); Leviner, d. John and Susanah, May 23, 1745; Nathaniel, s. John and Susanah, May 16, 1751; Seth, s. Nathaniel and Tabitha, April 8, 1733 (C.R.); Thankful, d. Nathaniel and Kezia, Aug. 19, 1739 (C.R.); William, s. Nathaniel, April 21, 1728 (C.R.). The page does not say which Nathaniel, and a mother 'Tabitha' for Seth against 'Kezia' for the later children is as printed. The George entry gives 1728, while the Marlborough record (p. 142) gives George 18 Feb 1719-20; that difference is not resolved here. Whether these are our people: Likely that Seth, s. Nathaniel and Tabitha (b. 1733) is the tree's Seth Oak (b. 1733), son of Nathaniel Oak (b. 1703) and Tabitha (Rice) Oak: the name, the date and the parents' first names agree with the tree, which already holds Tabitha Rice as Nathaniel's wife (the Marlborough marriage of 1726-7). This changes an earlier working theory that Seth came through a Nathaniel of Bolton; that question is still open. Not tagged: William (1728) and the other children.

How it is shown: Complete page as supplied; no crop, no retouch, no search highlight.
Keep in mind: What the page says: Confirmed from the page image. The roll is dated the fifteenth day of September 1755; the signers are listed in two columns and 'Seth Oak' is in the right-hand column between 'Fairbank Moor' and 'Benja Bridge'; Nourse adds that these soldiers from Lancaster and neighbouring towns served in Col. Josiah Brown's regiment and in the companies of Capt. Jeduthan Baldwin and Lt.-Col. John Cummings, with the muster rolls in the Massachusetts Archives. The page gives no town, age or parents for Seth Oak. Whether this is our person: Likely, not Confirmed, that this Seth Oak is the tree's Seth Oak (b. 1733), later Capt. Seth Oaks of the artificers (1777-78): the surname, the era and the Lancaster-Bolton area fit the Bolton marriage the tree records for him; the Westborough town record of 1733 names the parents (Nathaniel Oak and Tabitha) of a Seth Oake born there; that the 1755 enlistee is that Seth is Likely, and that his father is Nathaniel Oak Jr. rests on the 1906 register and the Rice wills (Likely). The roll does not name a colonel or company; Nourse says the soldiers on it served in Col. Josiah Brown's regiment and in other companies whose rolls are in the Massachusetts Archives, and prints the roll from the papers of Col. Oliver Wilder.

Keep in mind: What the page says: Confirmed. The entry reads 'OAK, SETH, Winchendon. Sergeant, Capt. Moses Hale's co. of militia, Col. Nathan Sparhawk's regt., which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775, to Cambridge; service, 14 days; also, Capt. Abel Wilder's co., Col. Ephraim Doolittle's regt.; ... also, Quartermaster Sergeant, Col. Ephraim Doolittle's regt.' The page also holds a separate 'OAK, NATHANIEL' Bolton pay roll of 1780 and other Oak entries (Sylvanus and others), which are not tagged. Whether this is our person: Likely, not Confirmed, that Seth Oak of Winchendon is the tree's Seth Oak (b. 1733), by the surname, the era and the Worcester County area of his 1755 and 1777-78 service; the entry gives no age or parents.

Keep in mind: Nathaniel of Bolton appears here and continues on p. 598. Unconfirmed that the Nathaniel of Bolton entries are the Nathaniel Oak born 1751: they fit the pension file's Capt. Benjamin Hastings company at Bolton in 1775, but the printed abstracts name no parents or later residence (Likely at best).

Keep in mind: Confirmed that the card is headed 'Capt Seth Oaks' Co. of Ar...' with the years 1777-1778 and lists miscellaneous records (lists, returns, pay accounts); the end of the company name is hidden by a second card pasted at the top right, and the title is completed by the Fold3 catalog entry 'Capt. Seth Oak's Co. Of Artificers (83)'. It is an index card to records, not a roster. Likely that Capt. Seth Oaks of the artificers is the tree's Seth Oak (b. 1733), on the strength of the 1916 War Department reply and the DAR lineage entry already held; the card itself names no town or family.

Keep in mind: Pay roll of about 35 names headed Capt. Ezra Chaffe[e]; two rows are Seth Oak and Nathaniel Oak. The column headings are cut off at the top of this page; the names are confirmed as printed. Vermont Revolutionary War Rolls (NARA M246), Capt. Ezra Chaffee's company, 1782, folder 111. Identification of Seth Oak with Seth Oak born 1733 (called Justice of the Peace at Athens by Jan 1783) is Likely; Nathaniel Oak on the roll is Likely the tree's Nathaniel Oak born 1762, Seth's son, serving in the same company.

Keep in mind: Symonds (aged 66, of Orange) says he belonged to Capt. Seth Oak's company in Col. Letterlow's regiment for one year ending 6 March 1778. A veteran's (or widow's) declaration that names Capt. Seth Oak's/Oaks' company at Winchendon in 1777. The pension file is another man's; Seth has no pension file of his own. Identification of the Capt. Seth Oak(s) of Winchendon with Seth Oak born 1733 is Likely (the 1906 register says he was 'never a commissioned officer'; a Pension Office agent in 1840 wrote he 'probably acted as Capt.'). The year before 'I belonged' is hard to read and 'Letterlow' is the reading here of the regiment's name.
Evidence for: Revolutionary War pension file W.15415, Zebedee Symonds.

Keep in mind: Atherton (aged 79, of Shutesbury) says he enlisted as a blacksmith in a company of militia commanded by Capt. Seth Oaks of Winchendon, Luther Graves lieutenant, and served about twelve months to March 1778 (Brandywine, Valley Forge).

Keep in mind: Pension file W.19932, Calvin Oak of Athens, Vt. (died 8 or 10 Nov 1815), widow Lucretia (Fuller). Fold3 record 25086452, NARA M804, 33 images. The file is a Confirmed record of Calvin Oak of Athens; his identification as the son of Seth Oak (and as the Calvin Oak born 1758) is Likely, because no page names his father (the widow only believes he served a year under Capt. Seth Oaks, which the Pension Office did not allow). The widow's belief about Seth Oaks is hearsay and was not allowed; it names Seth as captain but not as Calvin's father.

Keep in mind: Officer chronology only (context for a unit named in the person's own record); the page names no Oak, and no personal service is inferred from it. Context for Seth Oak and Calvin Oak: the printed Soldiers and Sailors entries place both in Capt. Abel Wilder's company, Col. Ephraim Doolittle's regiment, in 1775. F corrected an earlier citation of p. 145 to printed p. 156.

Keep in mind: Printed entries read as printed. Seth's entry is named service, not individual battle attendance; his identification with Seth Oak born 1733 is Likely. The first entry (Oak, Nathaniel, pay roll of the Bolton six-months men, marched 10 July 1780, discharged 16 Dec 1780) is tied to Nathaniel Oak born 1762 as Likely (his Athens pension widow says he lived at Bolton and served six months in 1780); it names no age or residence beyond Bolton.

Chaffee's company with Seth in 1782). Identification of Seth Oak with Seth born 1733 is Likely. Unconfirmed.

His wife is tagged as named here; Seth's identification is Likely. The page continues on p. 16. Unconfirmed.

Keep in mind: Adjutant General's reply of 8 May 1916 to a private correspondent (addressed 'Josephine Edwards Tinkbaur, Kirkwood, Illinois', a person of 1916 long since deceased). It says the records show one Seth Oaks as captain of a company designated Capt. Oaks' Company of Artificers, Continental Troops, on a muster roll of 7 Sept 1777 (commissioned 19 March 1777). Identification with Seth Oak born 1733 of Winchendon and Athens is Likely (other records name Capt. Seth Oak's artificers in 1777-1778). The second paragraph concerns a Nathan Oaks, a private in Capt. Edgell's company, Jacobs' regiment, who is not identified with any person in the tree and is not tagged.

Keep in mind: Printed attribution confirmed; whether this Capt. Seth Oaks is the Winchendon and Athens man is a separate question (Likely: other records name Capt. Keep in mind: Part of pension file W.25398 (Nathaniel Oak of Athens, Vt., died 25 March 1830, married Susan Evans 1787; widow Susan Oaks). The file itself is a Confirmed record of that man. That he is the Nathaniel Oak born 1762, son of Seth Oak of Winchendon and Athens, is Likely: an inquirer's 1923 letter (scan 00116) says so and the Pension Office reply fits his 1780 service; the file never names his parents. Keep this file separate from the Chelsea pensioner's S.18534. These are the correspondent's assertions and questions, not findings; the reply is scan 00099. The 'Negative' note means no record of Seth was found by the Pension Office in 1923. Labels: Seth's parentage and Nathaniel's parentage are Likely as stated by the inquirer; the inquirer is not otherwise identified.

Keep in mind: What the page says: a column of names with Seth Oak among them and, below, entries about a pay roll and petitions on file in the Secretary's office (1779-1781); the page number is not clear at thumbnail scale (about 608) and the book is not named on the page. Whether this is our person: Likely, not Confirmed, that Seth Oak is the tree's Seth Oak (b. 1733), the same book as the Vermont rolls pages 609-610 already registered by the stories lane.

Keep in mind: What the page says: the running head reads 'REVOLUTIONARY WAR ROLLS 611'; the roll runs from a Sept. 16 commencing date, with five days' service for most men and a line 'Travel fr. 20 to 34 miles'; Seth Oak and Nathaniel Oak (read as 'Netha'l Oak') are on the list, among men such as Samuel Whitney and John How. The book is not named on the page. Whether this is our person: Likely, not Confirmed, that Seth Oak is the tree's Seth Oak (b. 1733), who also appears on the Vermont rolls pages already registered; Nathaniel Oak is not tagged because several Nathaniel Oaks of that area exist.

The date of her declaration was above the part of the page photographed and is not stated here.
