Keep in mind: Confirmed. 'Mehitable, his d. w. of Nathaniel Oakes' is Savage's abbreviated paraphrase of the will, not its text; the will itself was not seen. Mehitable is not in Savage's list of John Rediat's children (John 1644, Samuel 1653, Eliz. 1657).

Keep in mind: What the page says: Confirmed: Nathaniel Oak is named in the group above, which the page brackets as '8. men' although six names are printed beside the bracket. The list gives surnames and first names only, with no ages or households. Whether this is our person: Likely, not Confirmed, that this is the tree's Nathaniel Oak (born about 1645, died 17 February 1721): the name, the town and the date fit a Marlborough man of that generation, and his son of the same name was not born until 1703/4. The page gives no age or family detail. This dated muster is a different document from the undated list assigning families to garrisons in Hudson's History of Marlborough, pp. 109-110.

How it is shown: Complete page as supplied; no crop, no retouch, no search highlight.
Keep in mind: What the page says: Confirmed from the page image, with the dates as printed: Ann, d. Natthaniel and Mary, Sept. 9, 1712; Gorge, s. Nathanil of Westbrow and Mary, Feb. 18, 1719-20; Hannah, Dec. 27, 1707; John, March 16, 1714-15; Jonathan, Aug. 21, 1717; Mary, March 31, 1710; Natthaniel, Jan. 7, 1703 (the year is printed 1703); William, Feb. 18, 1705; most with the note that the church record spells the name Oak. The same page prints 'OAK, Mary, bap. Nov. 29, 1741,' a different, later Mary, and later Oakes and Oaks families (Albert and Abigail; John and Experience) that are not Nathaniel's line. Whether these are our people: Likely, not Confirmed. The eight names, their birth order and the parents' names 'Natthaniel and Mary' match exactly the eight children the 1826 Worcester Magazine footnote gives to Nathaniel Oaks and Mary Holloway, and the tree holds the same eight; the page names no surname for Mary, and the tie to the tree's Nathaniel Oak(e) and Mary (Holloway) Oak rests on that match and the Marlborough place. William (b. 18 Feb 1705) is Likely the William Oakes of 18 who died in the 1723 Shrewsbury fire, by age alone. The 1741 baptism is not tagged. A caution on the date: Natthaniel's 7 Jan 1703 falls in the old-style January-to-March window, where a year written plainly as 1703 is often meant as 1703/4 in today's reckoning; the page does not say which the clerk meant. The parents' own Concord marriage, dated "March ye 2d 1703," carries the same ambiguity and is not independently resolved either (see the Nathaniel Oake story). This is a caution about reading the date, not a claim that one reading is correct.

The News-Letter text as Hudson prints it says 'Monday, the 16th', but 16 Aug 1707 was a Saturday; Hudson's own sentence on p. 106 says 18 August (a Monday), and the Lancaster letter of 19 Aug places the Tuesday fight on the 19th.

Keep in mind: Confirmed as read: the date and the vote naming Nathaniel Oak. The word after 'Countrey' begins with a capital P and is NOT 'Store' (best reading 'Powd[er]', uncertain): do not quote 'Countrey Store'. The entry says only 'nathaniel oak'; his son Nathaniel was about 15, so it is almost certainly the father (Likely). The day numeral is read as 2 (moderate confidence); a second heading on the page reads 'March ye 2: 1718(19)'.

Keep in mind: Transcribed (frames 766-782); a first reading was made. Likely: descriptions Likely, amounts only partly read, and the pairing of several amounts with names is not reliable. The closing allowance, balance and date were not recovered. A line read 'Nathanell & William Oke' is Likely only, and whether it means two sons is unknown. Further parties tagged on 4 Oct 2026: Adam Holloway (1655–1733) (creditor 'to Adam Holloway' in Mary Oke's account (Likely reading in the transcription; Adam Holloway, Mary's father)).

Likely: the day figure '17th' (the 7 carries a tick) and the item wording. The line 'inventory taken may [2?]th 17[2?]' is only partly legible; the appraisers were sworn 23 May 1721 (frame 767). Keep in mind: The interlined correction above the signature line and the clerk's abbreviation of 'Entred' are doubtful. The judge's signature does not appear in this order. The right-hand page (p. 504) is other estates, not the Oak family. 500 to the upper part of p. 503 and that p. 499 and the top of p. 500 are another estate.

Keep in mind: The blotted given name before 'Goodenow' is read Jonathan (confirmed from the signature line on image 279). The upper part of the spread (p. 499 and the top of p. 500) is a different estate (Maj. Wade's widow's third, 1730) and is not the Oak family. The margin mark 'L8' is unexplained. 500 to the upper part of p. 503 and that p. 499 and the top of p. 500 are another estate.

Keep in mind: Names, birth order and sums read clearly; spellings of some abutters (Rediat, Macholster, Eager) are uncertain. The page does not name William; the guardianship papers name eight children in 1722 and this return names seven living by 1729. 500 to the upper part of p. 503 and that p. 499 and the top of p. 500 are another estate.

Keep in mind: A viewer capture of the spread, not an original file. FamilySearch's own machine transcript (which reads 1782) was not relied on. Ties the boy Jonathan to Nathaniel's estate in 1732; it does not tie him to the later Jonathan of Harvard and Canaan (that rests on the 1906 register). Further parties tagged on 4 Oct 2026: Nathaniel Oak(e) (first record 1686; died 1720/21) (the father named on the page: 'son of Nathaniel Oak late of Westborough' (Likely)). How it is shown: Complete page as supplied; no crop, no retouch, no search highlight.
Keep in mind: What the page says: Confirmed. The footnote says Nathaniel Oaks came from England; married Mehitabel, daughter of John Rediet, who died 25 Nov 1702 without children; his second wife Mary was a daughter of Adam Holloway; the children were Nathaniel (of Bolton), William (burned at Shrewsbury in Capt. Keyes's house), Hannah (m. Gershom Fay Jr., d. 8 Mar 1806), Mary (m. Daniel Maynard, Marlborough), Ann (m. David Maynard, Westborough), John, Jonathan (removed to Harvard) and George. The text says nothing of a shipwreck, a cabin boy or a catamount; it is a printed account of 1826, not a contemporary record. Whether these are our people: the page names Nathaniel Oaks of Marlborough, his two wives and his children, and the tree holds the same parents and the same eight children with the same spouses (Likely for each child, since the tie to Nathaniel rests on this 1826 account). That the 'William' of the footnote is the William Oakes aged 18 named in the Boston News-Letter of 15 Aug 1723 is Likely, not Confirmed: the footnote is a later secondary account. Not tagged: John Rediet and the other people named on the page.

Keep in mind: A compiler's directory with no sources cited, repeating H. L. Oak's 1906 register (Unconfirmed: born about 1645, immigrant about 1660-5, a vague tradition of Wales, the 1645 birth a conjecture) and adding the word Dorchester on an unknown basis. The datable fact in it is Marlboro, 1686. The earlier registered image is a crop of this same page.
