About Karl

Biography

Charles (Karl) Weiss came from Switzerland about 1889, became an American citizen and spent his working life as a weaver in Paterson, New Jersey, the Silk City.

From Switzerland to Paterson

Charles Weiss was born in Switzerland on January 31, 1878, according to his 1918 draft card (draft card). The 1920 census says he came to the United States in the 1880s, that he was naturalized, and that German was his mother tongue; his wife Emma was born in Ohio (1920 census). Their two eldest sons, Charles and George, were born in New York about 1901 and 1903.

The 1915 census and the draft card share the Madison Avenue address.

North Haledon

In the mid-1930s Charles and Emma moved to 61 Park Street in North Haledon, just north of Paterson. He retired about 1942 and died at home on the morning of September 27, 1949, aged 71. The Paterson Morning Call's obituary called him a retired weaver, said he had been in the country sixty years, and named his memberships in the Riverside Athletic and Singing Society and the Workmen's Benefit and Benevolent Association. He was survived by Emma, whose maiden name it gives as Piquet, by five sons, among them Raymond W. of Paterson, and by ten grandchildren, and was buried in Laurel Grove Memorial Park (Morning Call, 28 Sep 1949).
