How to read this page

Sex is as recorded in the family tree. Age at death is worked out from the dates shown and may be a range or an approximation. It is left out when a date is missing or is only a “before”, “after” or “between” date, when the research has found a date Unconfirmed, when the two dates conflict, or when they would mean an age over 110.

Biography

Franciszka Jeleniewska came from the village of Żarnowo, near Augustów in north-eastern Poland, and raised a large family in Manayunk, Philadelphia.

Żarnowo to Manayunk

Franciszka was baptized in the parish of Augustów in 1872, in the village of Żarnowo, the daughter of Julian Jeleniewski and Marianna Zyskowska (Geneteka). In 1890 she married Antoni Milewski of Jaziewo in the neighbouring parish of Jaminy. Their first son, John Frank, was born at Żarnowo in December 1892, and before he was two the family was in Philadelphia.

Confirmed About this evidence

The baptism and marriage are entries in the Geneteka index of the parish registers. The family tree gives her birth as 10 October 1874; the index places her baptism in 1872.

In 1910 Frances, as American records call her, was 36 and kept house for Antoni and eight children on Grape Street in Manayunk (1910 census); in 1920 the household on Carson Street held seven sons. Her sister Scholastica also came to Philadelphia; Scholastica's 1944 death certificate names the same parents, Julian Jeleniewski and Mary Zyskowska. Franciszka was widowed in December 1925; the family tree gives her own death as February 23, 1928, which a record has yet to confirm.
