About Antoni

Biography

Antoni Milewski was born in 1867 in the village of Jaziewo, in the parish of Jaminy in north-eastern Poland, brought his family to Philadelphia in the 1890s and raised them in Manayunk, where he worked in the steel trade until his death in 1925.

From Poland to Manayunk

Antoni was baptized in the parish of Jaminy in 1867, in the village of Jaziewo, the son of Mateusz Milewski and Marianna Matyskiela; the parish index enters his baptism as act 122 of that year, and the family tree gives his birth as October 30. His parents had married at Jaminy in 1858. His death certificate names the same parents, though its informant gave his birth as November 1, 1870. In 1890, at Jaminy, he married Franciszka (Frances) Jeleniewska of Żarnowo, the daughter of Julian Jeleniewski and Marianna Zyskowska, and their eldest son, John Frank, was born at Zarnowo in December 1892. John's naturalization petition says he sailed from Hamburg and landed at Philadelphia on May 15, 1894.

Confirmed About this evidence

The baptism and the parents' 1858 marriage are entries in the Geneteka index of the Jaminy parish registers, which this site has not seen as images; the death certificate is held as an image. The 1910 census age (39) is closer to the certificate's 1870.

The 1910 census found Antoni, 39, and Frances, 36, on Grape Street in Manayunk with John and seven younger children, the older ones already at work in the district's worsted mills (1910 census). In January 1920 the census taker found them on Carson Street with seven sons, most of the working household in the yarn mills.

Antoni died at home, 4526 Baker Street, on December 28, 1925, aged 55, of lobar pneumonia after four days' illness. The certificate describes him as a married steel worker. He was buried in Westminster Cemetery on January 2, 1926.
