About Natalee

Biography

Cissie grew up in Tulsa, attended the University of Texas and married Herbert Kelso Clarkson in 1943. Later directories place the couple in San Antonio and Greater Houston.

Tulsa and Austin

The 1920 census lists an infant Cissie with Nat E. and Zula Ligon and an older sister, Marjorie. In 1930, ten-year-old Natalee appears with Zula Lee in a Tulsa household using the surname Moss. Her wedding notice says she graduated from Monte Cassino high school before attending the University of Texas.

Likely About this evidence

The census households do not by themselves establish biological parentage or explain the surname change.

The university's 1939 yearbook includes Cissie among Bluebonnet Belle nominees and on a “Good Fellows” page. Newspaper accounts name her as a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, Ownooch and the Girls' Cotillion Club. In 1940 she lived with her mother in Austin; the census recorded three completed years of college and housework.

Likely About this evidence

The yearbook records a nomination, not a win, and does not clearly identify her position in the group photographs. Schooling, affiliations and the reported university graduation remain attributed newspaper statements; the degree and graduation year are not established.

Marriage in New York

Cissie married Lieutenant (junior grade) Herbert Kelso Clarkson on October 9, 1943, at the Little Church Around the Corner. The Tulsa World described her rose-and-silver lamé ensemble and brown butterfly orchids. Her sister, Mrs. Roy Berry Jr., was her only attendant. The families gathered at the Astor Hotel afterward, and the report said the couple would live in New York during Herbert's temporary posting (Austin American-Statesman).

Likely About this evidence

The marriage index and both wedding reports support the ceremony.

San Antonio and Houston

In 1950, Cissie and Herbert lived in San Antonio with their daughter Margery. Cissie was recorded as keeping house. The 1951 directory used Natalee C.; the 1952–1953 edition used Sissie and repeated the family's Larchmont address.

Confirmed About this evidence

The 1952–1953 directory is one edition, not two independent annual observations.

Society notices place Mrs. Herbert Kelso Clarkson as Mary Anita Dittmar's sponsor at the German Club's opening ball in November 1950 and among the women assisting at Frances Heard's debut reception in February 1951. In June 1954, a newspaper reported the couple and their daughter returning from a Houston visit that included the Pin Oak Horse Show. The 1955 directory listed Herbert and Cissie in Greater Houston.

Likely About this evidence

The married-name notices are Likely identifications of Cissie. They establish particular events, not a club office, occupation or horse ownership. The 1955 household identification is Likely; its locality abbreviation and the exact move date remain unresolved. The Roy Berry hosts in the 1954 item are not independently identified as her sister's household.

A later account under Chambliss

Cissie was probably the Cissie L. Chambliss whose June 1984 notices in the Victoria Advocate describe a Port O'Connor resident married to Edgar Raye Chambliss. The fuller obituary gives an August 19, 1919, birth date and names Slayden Clarkson, Margery Oak, Lynn Jamison and Margery Berry among her family. An earlier notice says she died at Champ Traylor Memorial Hospital on Friday, June 8, 1984, at 5:15 p.m.

Likely About this evidence

The identification remains Likely, supported by the names, age and Tulsa birthplace. These notices do not establish the date of the Chambliss marriage or the end of the Clarkson marriage. Victoria is the newspaper's location, not an established place of death.
