How to read this page

Sex is as recorded in the family tree. Age at death is worked out from the dates shown and may be a range or an approximation. It is left out when a date is missing or is only a “before”, “after” or “between” date, when the research has found a date Unconfirmed, when the two dates conflict, or when they would mean an age over 110.

About Elizabeth

Biography

Lizzie's childhood in the Frye household and an earlier 1892 marriage open her page; she then appears in Skowhegan marriage, census and family notices, followed by directory entries in Waterville and Augusta.

Childhood and an earlier marriage

Lizzie's 1936 obituary says that after her parents died when she was a baby, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Frye of Skowhegan took her in and raised her, and that she went to school there.

Confirmed About this evidence

This is the obituary's own account of her childhood, printed in 1936; it is not a legal adoption record.

A Maine marriage record names Lizzie B. Evans as the bride of Marshall G. Eames on September 3, 1892.

Likely About this evidence

The reading of this card has not had a documented second check, so it is kept at Likely rather than Confirmed; the link to the Lizzie of the obituary rests on the name and place.

A second Maine marriage record, from May 1895, names the widowed Lizzie B. Ames as the bride of George F. Oak at Skowhegan, and gives her occupation as domestic.

Likely About this evidence

Same caveat as the 1892 record: the name has shifted again (Ames for Eames), and the identification is Likely, not independently re-checked here.

Mrs. Lizzie Oak of Skowhegan

Elizabeth B. Ames married George F. Oak in Skowhegan on May 3, 1895. A Portland newspaper notice described her as the widow Ames (marriage record).

Confirmed About this evidence

The vital and newspaper entries agree on the date and place. The newspaper gives George's middle initial as H.; the vital record gives F.

Censuses from 1900 through 1930 place Lizzie in Skowhegan. A newspaper announced a daughter in April 1906. A May 1912 notice reported the death of nineteen-month-old Verna Oak, daughter of George and Lizzie (1900 census; 1906 notice).

Confirmed About this evidence

Lizzie's recorded birth year varies. The tree separately dates Verna's life to 1902–1903, which conflicts with the child's age in the 1912 notice.

Lizzie was listed in the Waterville city directory in 1931 and the Augusta directory in 1933. An obituary index cites the Waterville Morning Sentinel of March 16, 1936 (1931 directory).

Likely About this evidence

The directory entries are direct listings. The obituary notice itself is now read in full in the childhood section above, rather than only an index entry. Related family notices also leave a name conflict: George's 1923 widow is called Lizzie Flye, while Irving's 1981 obituary names his mother Elizabeth Evans Oak. That relationship remains unresolved.

Life events

BornOCT 1874, Lewiston, Androscoggin, Maine, USA
Likely evidence: show why

Why: The 1900 census gives October 1874. Her first marriage record (Skowhegan, 3 Sep 1892, aged 18) and her 1936 obituary give Lewiston as her birthplace; her 1895 marriage record gives Augusta, so the place is disputed. No record seen gives the day.
