| Born | 18 JUN 1841, Somerville, Lincoln, Maine, USA Likely evidence: show whyWhy: An index of Maine births gives 18 June 1841 at Somerville, son of Elisha and Betsey Evans, and the 1850 Somerville census lists him at 9. The original town record has not been seen; one user tree places the birth at Thomaston, where an Elisha and Betsey Evans had children from 1826 to 1841. Records:

| Military service | Private in Company I, 3rd Maine Infantry, mustered in 4 June 1861; discharged for disability, 26 December 1862, 4 Jun 1861 - 26 Dec 1862, Maine Confirmed evidence: show whyWhy: The Maine Adjutant General's report for 1863 lists 'Evans Joseph O', aged 20, of Somerville, in Company I of the 3rd Maine Infantry, mustered into U.S. service on 4 June 1861, with the remark 'Disc. for disability Dec. 26, 62'. The remarks column is printed half a row above the name it belongs to, so the Gettysburg death printed beside his row belongs to the next man, George L. Fellows (Maine at Gettysburg does not list Evans, and the tree gives Evans children from 1865). Only one Joseph O. Evans appears in the Maine rolls, and the tree has him born at Somerville in 1841.
