About Ruth

Mentioned in another story

This story is about someone or something else, and names Ruth Joyce Kelso Clarkson.

Biography

Ruth Joyce Kelso grew up in San Antonio, married Army officer Herbert Slayden Clarkson, and returned to the city after years of Army postings. Music and the Timely Topics Club recur in the newspaper accounts of her life.

Craig Place and marriage

Ruth was born in San Marcos on November 2, 1891, the daughter of Winchester Kelso and May Joyce. Her brother Winchester was born four years later. By 1910 the family lived at 107 Craig Place in San Antonio, an address Ruth continued to use in later family and travel records.

Likely About this evidence

Ruth's passport statement gives her birth and wedding dates; her mother's passport also names Ruth and gives her birth date. The continuing Craig Place address does not prove uninterrupted residence or ownership.

At 21, Ruth married Lieutenant Herbert Slayden Clarkson at Laurel Heights Methodist Church on September 18, 1913. Bishop Edwin D. Mouzon officiated. The San Antonio Light described an ivory satin gown, a silver moire train and a Limerick lace veil. Marjorie McGown was maid of honor and Raymond Woodward best man.

Confirmed About this evidence

The wedding account supplies the ceremony details. Earlier society-page reports remain Likely, based on excerpts.

Timely Topics and music

A 1955 newspaper feature recalled Ruth and five friends holding weekly parties in 1913, learning to cook and sew and helping make one another's trousseaus. It said that by 1916 they had formed a discussion group at the Menger Hotel, with members answering roll call with current events. Jean Aubrey suggested the name Timely Topics, and Ruth became its first president (The San Antonio Light, 24 March 1955).

Likely About this evidence

This is a retrospective account written more than forty years later. It distinguishes the earlier gatherings from the later discussion club; neither should be presented as an independently confirmed founding date.

In February 1923, a newspaper reported a surprise at a Timely Topics luncheon: a hidden loudspeaker carried a live performance from radio station WOAI. Ruth accompanied Pat Swearingen's violin solo on the piano, then sang two songs with Homer T. Wilson's wife accompanying her (The San Antonio Evening News, 15 February 1923).

Confirmed About this evidence

The contemporary report identifies Ruth by her full married name. Later club offices and host roles remain Unconfirmed where they are known only from excerpts or shortened names.

Travel and Army life

In June 1923, Ruth applied for a passport to travel with her six-year-old son to France, Italy, Belgium, Spain and Switzerland for “Travel and Study.” She returned from Cherbourg aboard the Majestic that autumn, on a passenger list with her son and May Joyce Kelso (passport application).

Confirmed About this evidence

The application states her plans; the passenger list establishes the return voyage. It does not identify what she studied or every place she visited. May's age on the list conflicts with her other records; her account discusses the identification.

Ruth lived in Washington, D.C., in 1930, at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, by 1935, and in Chicago in 1940. She was 43 when her mother died in San Antonio on August 31, 1935. By 1947 Ruth was back in San Antonio, and in 1950 she and Herbert lived on Park Drive in Olmos Park (1930 census; 1940 census).

Likely About this evidence

Census and family notices support the residences. No cited record establishes whether Ruth attended her mother's funeral. The Park Drive house number remains a Likely reading.

Her death in 1973

Ruth died at home on January 19, 1973, aged 81. Her obituaries described her as a member of Christ Episcopal Church and St Margaret's Guild and a former member of Timely Topics. Funeral services were held on January 22, followed by burial at Mission Burial Park. Herbert, their son, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survived her (Light, 21 January 1973; Express, 22 January 1973).

Confirmed About this evidence

The obituaries and death certificate agree on the death date. They do not establish when she joined the Episcopal church.
