Why: Marlborough records: 'John, s. Nathaniel and Mary, March 16, 1714-15' (printed). That this John is the John of Westborough who married in 1742 and died by 1752 is probable: a 1722 guardianship calls the minor John 'of Westborough', and the only rival John lived until 1767.

Why: Westborough records: 'Nathaniel, s. John and Susanah, May 16, 1751' (printed). That this baby is the Revolutionary soldier is strongly supported (age, Winchester, Capt. Hastings, a son named Benjamin Hastings Oak, the 1830 census) but rests on identification.

Why: The Westborough records of John and Susanna Oake's children (Hannah 1743, Leviner 1745, Elijah 1747, Hannah 1749, Nathaniel 1751) do not include Philip; nothing found shows whose child this is, and John was only about 18-20 when a child born in 1733-35 would have arrived.

| Guardianship | Named among the eight children of Nathaniel Oak in a guardian's bond: 'To John in his seventh'; his guardian was Jonathan Forbush of Sutton, and in March 1728/9 he chose his uncle William Holloway, Feb 1721/2, Westborough, Massachusetts Confirmed evidence: show whyWhy: In the guardian's bond of early February 1721/2 (frame 774 of the Middlesex probate file), Jonathan Forbush of Sutton took the guardianship of eight children of the late Nathaniel Oak of Westborough, named Mary, Anne, John, Jonathan, George, Nathaniel, William and Hannah. John's age is given as 'in his seventh' (year), which fits his birth in March 1714/15. A slip of 24 March 1728/9 calls him a minor 'in his fifteenth year' who chose his 'unkill William Holloway' as guardian (the transcriber's reading).
