How to read this page

Sex is as recorded in the family tree. Age at death is worked out from the dates shown and may be a range or an approximation. It is left out when a date is missing or is only a “before”, “after” or “between” date, when the research has found a date Unconfirmed, when the two dates conflict, or when they would mean an age over 110.

About Emma

Biography

Emma Lucy Green came from Hoddesdon in Hertfordshire. She married William Clarkson in Liverpool in 1854 and lived there for the rest of her recorded life.

A carpenter's daughter

A parish transcription records the baptism of Emma Lucy Green at St Augustine's, Broxbourne, on December 27, 1835. Her parents were William, a carpenter, and Mary Ann Green of Hoddesdon. An Emma Green, described as a servant and born in Hoddesdon, appears in William and Mary Green's household there in 1851. Four younger children were also at home: James, William, Wallis and Louisa (FreeREG; 1851 census).

Likely About this evidence

The baptism, census entry and later bride are a Likely match based on name, birthplace, age and her father's trade. The baptism is a transcription; the register image is not cited here. Wallis is an uncertain name reading. Mary Ann's proposed maiden name, Waller, comes from a separate marriage transcription and remains Unconfirmed.

Marriage and family

Emma, a minor living on Soho Street, married William Clarkson at St Paul's Church, Liverpool, on July 6, 1854. He was a spirit dealer from Aigburth; her father was described as a builder. In 1858, their son William Banton's baptism again named her Emma Lucy. In 1861 the family lived at 171 Islington, where William worked as a brewer and wine and spirit merchant. Three young sons were at home. By 1871 they were at 10 Marsh Lane, Walton on the Hill, with Laura, Herbert and baby Florence. Later homes were The Priory in Toxteth Park in 1881 and The Friars in 1891 and 1901, where grown sons and Florence lived with them (1861 census; 1871 census; 1891; 1901).

Confirmed About this evidence

The census pages establish these households and consistently give Emma's birthplace as Hoddesdon. None records an occupation for her. The additional child Robert Banton listed on a memorial page has not been identified in these census households.

Her name in the records

Her marriage, her son's baptism and her probate entry use Emma Lucy. The censuses generally use Emma or Emma L. Her son's 1933 Texas death certificate instead names his mother Ellen Green, while the family tree and an index of the 1861 census use Eliza L.

Likely About this evidence

The 1861 image reads Emma L. The contemporary records favor Emma Lucy, but the reason for Ellen on the later certificate remains unresolved. Its informant was her granddaughter Florence Groos.

Her death in 1910

Emma died on October 4, 1910, after fifty-six years of marriage. The probate calendar gives her home as The Friars, St Michael's Hamlet, Liverpool. Administration of her estate was granted to William on November 26, with effects valued at £1,449 4s. 9d. The death index gives her age as 74 (1910 calendar).

Confirmed About this evidence

The probate calendar provides the death date and estate details and describes William as a justice of the peace. Burial at Allerton Cemetery is Likely, based on a memorial page rather than the burial register.
