About Alice

Biography

Alice Ann Peaple was born in England, married William Banton Clarkson in 1883, and raised seven children in Texas.

From Swindon to Liverpool

An unmarried Alice Peaple, born in Swindon, Wiltshire, worked as a housemaid at The Towers in Toxteth Park in 1881. She was probably the Alice who married William Banton Clarkson two years later (1881 census).

Likely About this evidence

The identification is Likely, based on name, birthplace and the later marriage. Her death certificate gives June 7, 1859, as her birth date and names her father only as Peoples. Census ages vary, and no birth or baptism record cited here establishes her parents. The tree's John Peaple and Eleanor Lester remain unconfirmed.

Marriage and Texas

William and Alice's marriage was registered in the Prestwich district in the final quarter of 1883. They crossed to the United States in 1884 or 1885. Their seven children were born in Texas: Florence in 1886, Dora in 1887, Alice in 1889, Herbert in 1891, Percy in 1893, Laurel in 1895 and Phyllis in 1897.

Likely About this evidence

The marriage index gives a district and quarter, not a ceremony date or church. The 1900 and 1920 censuses disagree on immigration year. No passenger record is cited.

In 1900 the family lived in Houston, where William worked as a cotton buyer. The census recorded seven children born to Alice, all living (1900 census).

Confirmed About this evidence

The children and birth years come from the census households and family records; the proposed Houston street reading remains Likely.

Washington Street

By 1910 the family lived on Washington Street in San Antonio, with five children still at home. Ten years later, Alice and William were at number 213 with Phyllis and a live-in cook. William was a cotton merchant. The censuses listed no occupation for Alice, and her death certificate later recorded her work as “home.” (1910 census; 1920 census)

Likely About this evidence

These records describe her households but little of her daily life. Ruth Kelso Clarkson was Alice's daughter-in-law through Herbert, not her daughter. The later married surnames in Alice's obituary include an uncertain reading.

Her death in 1922

Alice died at 213 Washington Street on April 25, 1922, aged 62. Her death certificate records diabetes and a diabetic coma. She was survived by William, two sons and five daughters. Her obituary announced a funeral for the following afternoon at St Mark's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. S. Arthur Huston officiating, and private interment at Mission Burial Park (The San Antonio Light, 25 April 1922).

Confirmed About this evidence

The certificate and newspaper agree on the date and address. The certificate describes about a year of illness; the newspaper says a brief illness. Its claim of thirty years in San Antonio conflicts with the 1900 Houston household.
